Attorney, Business Owner, and Violinist Melanie Elizabeth Bates Releases Debut Single

Today, Melanie E. Bates, attorney and owner of Melanie Bates Consulting, LLC, released her debut single as a solo violinist. The music was written by Iowan-based composer Duroje Gwamna and is titled, "Echoes and Horizons."

State resolution honors ‘Dear Mama’

Sallie Chew Baker, also known as “Dear Mama,” was honored at an Oct. 6 presentation of House Resolution No. 716, sponsored by Del. Bobby Orrock, R-Thornburg. The program was held near Macedonia Baptist Church in Woodford. Over 120 attendees were present with special music by violinist Melanie Bates, great-granddaughter of Dear Mama.

In June 2024, during Black Music Month, Melanie will launch the Black Musician Academy to educate underserved youth from Wards 7 and 8 on the history, impact, and repertoire of Black classical composers, whose remarkable contributions have historically been suppressed.

Having played violin when she was young, Melanie was always on the lookout for the perfect time to resume her practice. She says, “I had always wanted to resume playing the violin since quitting when I was young. It brings an amazing sense of balance and purpose to my life.”
